As soon as you take the exit on the main road to Hotel Boca de Agua, you will find yourself driving through the jungle and slowly saying goodbye to the civilized world. Upon arrival, after approximately 20 minutes, you will see a long staircase that leads to the main building and the entrance of the Boca de Agua complex.
Boca de Agua hotel was designed by architect Frida Escobedo, with the aim of making the hotel blend in with the natural surroundings of Bacalar. And that is something clearly visible in the layout of the grounds and the use of local, natural materials. Boca de Agua complex consists of a large, elongated building, completely surrounded by jungle. Here are common areas such as the reception, restaurant and the swimming pool to be found.
Several hiking trails take you to the villas that are spread out over the jungle and of course to the famous Laguna Bacalar. If you want to have an overview of the hotel? From the roof of the main building you look out over the houses, green jungle and the lagoon.

Hotel Boca de Agua counts 22 villas, surrounded by green jungle vegetation. The villas are built with locally sourced tropical hardwood and are raised off the ground to minimize the impact on nature. You reach the villa by staircase and upon entering you will be amazed by the sleek design and the beautiful furnishings. In addition, 14 rooms, called the master treehouse, have their own little plunge pool. Something you will enjoy a lot, because it can be hot and humid during the day.
The villas consist of a large open living room with a comfortable sofa, table and hammock. And an interior space with a bedroom, including a lovely large and soft bed, toilet and outdoor shower. Showering outside in the morning, while listening to all the sounds of the jungle around you, is a wonderful way to wake up. The pool is located exactly in the middle and connects both spaces.

Hotel Boca de Agua has a large swimming pool which is beautifully situated in a green environment in the middle of the complex. There are sunbeds in the water and several hammocks where you can relax.
One of the best things about staying at Boca de Agua hotel is its beautiful location on the Laguna de Bacalar. A pretty elevated path takes you from the main building to the jetty. And already from a distance you can see the different colors of blue popping up above the jungle.
On the jetty you just relax on one of the sunbeds, swim a little bit and climb into one of the hammocks, while the bartenders are available to serve you a fresh ceviche or cold drink. Liife doesn’t get any better.
Tip: Kayaks and sup boards are also available and there is nothing more beautiful than discovering the lagoon in this way.
In the restaurant of Hotel Boca de Agua you can go for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. The dinner in particular is very recommended. Not only because you don’t have to leave your hotel in the evening, but also because you are in a unique place in nature. I enjoyed dinner here for a few days with grilled prawns, fish with pesto and fresh fish prepared in tasty herb sauces.
When you stay at Boca de Agua, make sure you book a sailing trip. It was one of the highlights during my stay in Bacalar. With a small boat you sail for a few hours on the lagoon, stop every now and then for a dip in the water and enjoy the most beautiful sunset. Along the way you are served fresh ceviche and of course you will drink a bottle of wine. This trip has all the ingredients for a perfect afternoon in paradise.
Hotel Boca de Agua is located at the Laguna de Bacalar, a ten-minute drive from the town of the same name. Are you traveling through Mexico with a rental car? Then you can park your car next to the hotel. You can easily book a rental car via Rentalcars. You can also book a transfer to Bacalar through Bookaway, and travel from there by taxi or hotel shuttle to Boca de Agua. Another option in the future is the Maya train, a brand new project that connects different places in Yucatan Mexico.

Boca de Agua is a sustainable hotel, located on the lagoon of Bacalar, of which 90% of the terrain remains untouched as a nature reserve. The villas are built with local FSC-certified wood and are elevated so as not to disturb nature. Water is completely purified and reused, and mangrove plants are carefully protected or even replanted. Local people from the area and NGOs contribute to nature conservation, recycling and the protection of the habitat including the spider monkeys.
Laguna de Bacalar, or La Laguna de los Siete Colores, is known as the Maldives of Mexico and that is because of the beautiful colors of the water. There are seven shades of blue in the lake, that are best seen when the sun shines on it. Bacalar is an amazing destination if you want to enjoy the lake, the surrounding cenotes, birds and completely unwind from daily life. On top of that it is less crowded than the famous Riviera Maya.
