Mexico City is a metropolis that never stops surprising me. I’ve been countless times, and each visit reveals a different side of this enormous, fascinating place. The secret? Its neighbourhoods. From bohemian streets and leafy boulevards to luxurious areas and historic squares, Mexico City is truly a mosaic of atmospheres and styles. But where to stay in Mexico City? Which neighbourhoods are safe, fun, and worth it, and which ones should you skip? In this guide, I’ll take you through the best neighbourhoods in Mexico City, with tips for things to do, local vibes, unique addresses, and my favorite boutique hotels. Hopefully, it helps you find the right place for your trip.

Where to stay in Mexico City – discover the best neighbourhoods

Mexico City is vast and diverse, with neighbourhoods that each feel completely different in terms of safety, atmosphere, and style. Because the city is so big, it’s worth asking yourself upfront what you want to do and see. In this article, I share my favorite areas to stay, including hotel recommendations, so you can experience everything this city has to offer.

La Condesa: hip, green, and lively

La Condesa is one of the best neighbourhoods in Mexico City and one of my personal favorites. It’s trendy yet relaxed, with leafy boulevards, Art Deco architecture, and parks like Parque México and Parque España. Perfect for strolling, jogging, grabbing a coffee, or just people-watching.

Vintage shops, small boutiques, buzzing taquerías, and modern restaurants make this a great area for both day and night. If you’re wondering where to stay in Mexico City for a mix of charm and nightlife, La Condesa is always a good choice.

Roma: creative and culinary

Another of the best neighbourhoods in Mexico is Roma, divided into Roma Norte and Roma Sur. Stroll past 1920s mansions, colorful street art, art galleries, and hip coffee shops. Roma Norte is also home to some of the city’s most celebrated restaurants like Contramar and Rosetta.

Add nice markets like Mercado Medellín and Mercado Roma and the many art galleries, and you’ll see why this area is such a favorite. For me, Roma is one of the best places to stay in Mexico City, if food and culture are high on your list.

Polanco: luxury, culture, and fine dining

If you prefer luxury, Polanco is the one of the best neighbourhoods in Mexico City for you. Known for high-end shopping along Avenida Presidente Masaryk and cultural highlights like Museo Soumaya and the National Museum of Anthropology, Polanco combines elegance with world-class dining.

Pujol and Quintonil, two of the best restaurants in Latin America, are both located here. Polanco is the perfect area, if you’re looking for an upscale city trip experience.

Coyoacán: bohemian and history

Coyoacán feels like a world of its own. With cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and lovely squares filled with market stalls, it’s like stepping into a small town. The highlight is La Casa Azul, the Frida Kahlo Museum, set in the iconic blue house. And don’t miss the Mercado de Coyoacán for classic Mexican snacks and fun souvenirs.

Personally, I just love spending a day here, wandering the streets, grabbing a drink, and soaking up the laid-back vibe. If you decide to stay overnight in Coyoacán, you’ll be a bit farther from the city center.

Where to stay in Coyoacán:

San Ángel

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, San Ángel is a great choice. This charming neighborhood is full of monasteries, churches, and cobblestone streets. It is also known for the weekly Bazar Sábado, where local artists sell their work. San Ángel feels less touristy than other parts of Mexico City and is a great spot to relax and soak up a slower pace. Just keep in mind that it is also one of the neighbourhoods in Mexico City that is a bit farther from the city center.

Juárez: Upcoming and Surprising

During the day, you can visit the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and by night, sip a cocktail in one of the neighborhood’s speakeasies. Juárez was less popular for years, but it’s making a strong comeback as one of the best neighbourhoods in Mexico City. Expect old mansions, new boutiques, and hip cafés like Café Nin. The Zona Rosa area is known for its LGBTQ+-friendly vibe and lively nightlife. What I personally love about Juárez is its location, you’re within walking distance of both the historic center and Chapultepec Park.

Centro Histórico: The heart of the city

Centro Histórico is the bustling heart of Mexico City and has a completely different vibe from neighbourhoods like La Condesa or Roma. But no visit to Mexico City is complete without wandering through this UNESCO World Heritage site. Here you’ll find iconic landmarks like the Zócalo, Palacio Nacional, and the ruins of Templo Mayor. It’s full of historic buildings, museums, and plazas that you could explore for days.

Personally, I don’t prefer to stay in this part of Mexico City, it’s less cozy than neighbourhoods like Condesa and Roma, and much busier. The upside is that accommodation tends to be cheaper, and you’re within walking distance of many major attractions. Just be mindful of your belongings, and it is recommemded to take a taxi in the evening.
