Welcome to Gal Oya Lodge in Sri Lanka

From the main road, it is another short 15-minute drive along an unpaved road to the entrance of Gal Oya Lodge. From this moment on, the only sounds that dominate are those of birds, crickets, and frogs. Gal Oya Lodge in Sri Lanka includes a large private reserve, surrounded by mountains and tropical greenery. A beautiful path upon arrival leads to the swimming pool, a restaurant, and the bar – the central area of the complex – where you are warmly welcomed by the lovely team. A conscious choice has been made for an open design, allowing you to fully take in the surroundings. In addition, the restaurant is located at the foot of Monkey Mountain, which provides beautiful views.

The bungalows

Gal Oya Lodge features 10 spacious bungalows, spread out across the property. From the reception, it is a delightful walk through the jungle, during which you can spot countless flowers, lizards, and insects along the way. Once it gets dark, someone will walk with you carrying a flashlight, and you may even have the chance to see nocturnal animals such as the loris, a type of primate that is only active at night.

There are lodge bungalows, and signature bungalows that come with a private plunge pool. And believe me, this signature bungalow is the one you want to book. It is wonderful to cool off in your own little pool while enjoying views of the beautiful surroundings. Traveling with more people or with your family? Then the lodge villa is an excellent option, featuring two bedrooms and a private plunge pool. Each bungalow is built using natural materials and designed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. There is a seating area and a large outdoor terrace, a mosquito net and special air conditioning above the bed, fans, and a partially open bathroom.

Because the grounds are expansive and the bungalows are spaced far apart, you find yourself in your own peaceful world, with all the privacy you could wish for. Keep in mind that Gal Oya Lodge has chosen not to offer Wi-Fi, allowing you to fully surrender to the nature of Sri Lanka around you.

Restaurant

In the restaurant, you can enjoy an included à la carte breakfast every day. You can also optionally add lunch and dinner, which is highly recommended given the isolated location of Gal Oya Lodge. In addition, all dishes are freshly prepared for you, and you can choose between Western-oriented dishes or local specialties with fish or traditional Sri Lankan curries. I personally chose the Sri Lankan curry option several times, where you are served multiple small dishes that change every day. Delicious.

What to do around Gal Oya Lodge Sri Lanka

At Gal Oya Lodge in Sri Lanka, everything revolves around experiencing nature. Naturalists are available to guide you during your stay and explain more about the surroundings. You can choose from a wide range of activities, some of which are included and others available as optional add-ons.

Cycling and walking

During your stay, you can head out with a guide for a short cycling trip to Kiri Oruwa Lake, known for its various bird species, or take a longer ride to Namal Oya Reservoir. You can also climb Monkey Mountain early in the morning, a hike that takes about three hours. When you first see the mountain, it can be a bit intimidating: a steep climb leads you to the top, but once there, you are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding area.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to do the hike myself, partly due to the rain and the temporarily poor condition of the trail. But if you have the time, definitely try to do it. You can also head out early in the morning with a guide to go birdwatching.

Meet the Vedda

One of the highlights of my stay at Gal Oya Lodge was meeting the Vedda in Sri Lanka. The Vedda walk takes you into the world of Sri Lanka’s original inhabitants: the Vedda people. You are accompanied by a member of the community, who tells you about their way of life, traditions, and connection to nature. You will learn how they read tracks, which plants they use for healing, and how they have lived alongside the rainforest for centuries.

The walk takes place in the surroundings of Gal Oya National Park, where small Vedda communities still live. The tour is also private, making it feel very authentic. I found it a unique opportunity to respectfully learn about an almost vanished culture.

Go on a boat safari

Spotting swimming elephants? I had no idea it was possible, but it is, during a boat safari in Gal Oya National Park in Sri Lanka. You sail across the vast Senanayake Samudraya Lake, passing small islands and densely vegetated shores, in search of elephants gathering at the water’s edge to drink and swimming across the lake. An incredibly special sight. Along the way, you may also spot water birds and crocodiles. The tranquility on the water, combined with the surrounding views, makes this safari one of the best things to do in Sri Lanka.

Evening walk

Something you absolutely should not miss while staying at Gal Oya Lodge is the evening walk. Armed with a flashlight, you search for the sparkling eyes of small animals, reptiles, and birds. One of the highlights is spotting the remarkable Frogmouth bird and the loris (nocturnal primate), and if you are very lucky, you might even see the rare and endangered thick-tailed pangolin.

Jim Edwards Wildlife Research Centre

It is also well worth stopping by the Jim Edwards Wildlife Research Centre, located on the grounds of Gal Oya Lodge. This small-scale research center is dedicated to nature conservation and ecological research in the region. A team of biologists and nature guides works here to monitor local wildlife species and ecosystems, with special attention to rare and endangered species such as elephants and pangolins.

During a visit, you learn more about the animals of the rainforest, the research projects, and you can observe footage from the cameras that are regularly placed to capture wildlife. In some cases, you can even join the guides to help set up the cameras. In addition to research, Gal Oya Lodge also supports reforestation, environmental education, and local community projects in Sri Lanka. By working together with nearby villages, they actively contribute to sustainable development and the preservation of the natural environment.

Best travel time Gal Oya National Park Sri Lanka

Gal Oya National Park in Sri Lanka can be visited year-round, with each season having its own charm. In the cooler months from October to May, it is the perfect period for birdwatching, with countless migratory birds arriving during this time. During the warmer summer months, from June to September, the water level of the lake drops, causing animals to gather along the shores to graze and drink. The chance of spotting swimming elephants exists throughout the entire year.

How to reach Gal Oya Lodge in Sri Lanka

Gal Oya Lodge is located in a fairly remote area in eastern Sri Lanka, about 300 km from Colombo, with Bibile and Ampara being the nearest towns. The easiest way to reach the lodge is by private driver or organized transfer from Colombo (6 hours), Kandy (4–5 hours), Ella or the east coast (3–4 hours).

You can often travel by shuttle service to Akkaraipattu, Ampara or Inginiyagala, but from there you’ll need a taxi or tuk tuk. The lodge can also arrange transfers from several locations across Sri Lanka. It takes a bit of extra effort to get there, but that’s exactly what makes Gal Oya so special. There are also two domestic airports nearby: Batticaloa (3.5 hours by car) and Ampara (45 minutes).
