How many weeks do you need for this Sri Lanka itinerary?

How many weeks you’ll need for this Sri Lanka itinerary depends entirely on what you want to see and do, as well as your personal travel pace. If you follow the complete Sri Lanka route, around three weeks is ideal: distances are manageable and you’ll have enough time to experience the highlights without rushing. In this article, I also share practical tips to shorten or extend your Sri Lanka trip, allowing you to tailor the journey perfectly to your available time.

Transport in Sri Lanka – how to get around

Travelling around Sri Lanka can be done in many different ways, depending on your budget and the distances you want to cover. However, the best recommendation I can give is to travel with a private driver. It is fast, comfortable and very affordable. I personally had very positive experiences with this service. Of course, you can also arrange taxis through your hotel, book through ride-hailing apps such as uber or PickMe or search, compare and book transportation via Bookaway. For airport transfers, Welcome Pick Ups is a great option, as there’s nothing better than being picked up straight after a long flight.

Another popular way to travel is by train, with the absolute highlight being the route between Kandy and Ella. This journey is often described as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, offering views of tea plantations, mountains and small villages. It is important to book this iconic train journey online and well in advance to secure your spot. Train tickets can also be searched, compared and booked via Bookaway.

Tips and destinations for a Sri Lanka round trip

Day 1: Arrival in Colombo & travel to Negombo

This Sri Lanka itinerary starts in Colombo, where most international flights arrive. After landing at Bandaranaike International Airport, it’s a 30-45 minute drive to Negombo, a coastal town with wide beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. Take a stroll along the promenade or visit the local fish market, where trading is in full swing. It’s an experience, with rows of fish drying in the sun and vendors weighing their daily catch.

Hotel tip: Uga Riva Negombo

Anuradhapura (2 days)

Today this itinerary takes you to Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. In the dry north lies Anuradhapura, one of the country’s oldest cities and an important sacred site within Buddhism. Surrounded by water reservoirs and open plains, the complex consists of stupas, temples and sacred sites that once formed the political and religious heart of Sri Lanka. At its centre stands the Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred tree that has been venerated for over two thousand years. The best way to explore Anuradhapura is with a local guide and transportation, who will take you past ruins, temples and ancient bathing ponds. If you stay at Uga Ulagalla, you can also book a cycling tour through the area.

Travel time Negombo – Anuradhapura: approx. 4 hours

Hotel tip Anuradhapura

One of the most beautiful places to stay near Anuradhapura is Uga Ulagalla. Here, you’ll experience the atmosphere of old Ceylon while being fully immersed in nature and local traditions. Each villa has its own plunge pool, monkeys roam freely around the property, and dining at the Kamatha restaurant among the rice fields is one of the best authentic culinary experiences you’ll find.

Day trip: Wilpattu National Park (1 day)

From Anuradhapura, it’s easy to make a day trip to Wilpattu National Park, one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka. The landscape is defined by dense vegetation, sandy tracks and natural water lakes that play a vital role for wildlife. The park is home to leopards, sloth bears, water buffalo and countless bird species. What makes Wilpattu special is the sense of space and tranquillity, offering the chance to spot wildlife far from the crowds found in other parks. Wilpattu is best visited on a safari departing from Anuradhapura.

Anuradhapura via Dambulla to Sigiriya (1 day)

This part of the Sri Lanka itinerary takes you towards Sigiriya, with a stop in Dambulla. Hidden within a massive rock formation halfway up a hill, you’ll find five caves filled with over 150 Buddha statues. Upon entering the first cave, the sight is truly overwhelming: from enormous reclining Buddhas to countless golden figures. From the temple complex, you’ll also enjoy great views of the surrounding landscape, while dozens of monkeys play around.

The Dambulla Cave Temple can easily be visited by tuk-tuk in combination with Sigiriya, making it a great place to visit during your trip to Sri Lanka.

Sigiriya, Pidurangala & Hiriwaduna (2 days)

Today, two iconic rock formations take centre stage on this itinerary, each offering a different perspective on Sri Lanka’s landscape. Sigiriya Rock, also known as Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rising nearly 200 metres above the surrounding plains, it contains the remains of an ancient palace, complete with gardens, moats and frescoes. From the summit, you’re rewarded with panoramic views over fields, lakes and jungle – one of the most memorable views on the island.

Looking for a special experience? You can opt for a sunrise hot air balloon ride, making you observe Sigirya and the area from above.

Nearby lies Pidurangala Rock, often considered an alternative climb for Sigirya. The ascent can be a bit challenging, with steep sections and some scrambling near the top, but you will forget all the effort, once you reach the summit. From here, you’ll enjoy a spectacular view over the jungle, with Sigiriya Rock rising prominently in the distance. Do you want to go on a guided hike? Then you can book a tour here.

More tips for Sigiriya

To experience rural life, visit nearby villages such as Hiriwaduna, where you’ll gain insight into local traditions and daily life. These visits often end with a simple yet delicious local lunch. Curious? You can book your tour here.

In the evenings, there’s also a chance to spot the elusive loris, shy nocturnal creatures moving silently through the treetops. From Sigiriya, you can book a guided night walk near Pidurangala in search of these animals.

The next day, you can plan a safari from Sigiriya, especially if you are here during the dry season, between June and October. The park is known for the gathering of large herds of elephants around water sources. Besides elephants, the park is also home to deer, crocodiles, monkeys and countless bird species. The best way to visit Minneriya is by jeep safari, during which local guides take you along dusty tracks, past water points and lookout spots.

Read more about a 2 week Sri Lanka itinerary in the next guide. Do you have more time instead? Then travel onwards from Sigiriya to Sri Lanka’s east coast, which shows a very different side of the country. One of the most beautiful places to stay here is Uga Bay, located on the golden sandy beach of Pasikuda. The best time to visit Sri Lanka’s east coast is from May to September.

Kandy & Temple of the Tooth (2 days)

The itinerary continues to Kandy in Sri Lanka. This city lies among rolling hills and is considered the spiritual centre of Sri Lanka, because of its Temple of the Tooth Relic. Every day, countless pilgrims and visitors come here to attend ceremonies. According to tradition, a tooth of Buddha is kept in the temple, making it a place of great spiritual importance. As soon as you enter the temple grounds, you step into a different world, a world of incense, white garments, flower offerings and chanting. There is so much to see, feel and absorb. Just make sure to come prepared and cover your shoulders and legs when entering.

In the afternoon, you can visit the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, where you’ll find orchids, palm trees and towering forest giants. Afterwards, head into lively Kandy, settle down in a tea house or wander through a local market.

The railway runs through hilly terrain, past tea plantations, waterfalls and small mountain stations. The train slowly winds its way through the landscape, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the views. Whether you choose a seat or stand in the open doorway, this journey is an experience.

Please note: it’s important to book your train journey well in advance, as seats fill up quickly. If the famous route is fully booked, you’ll find an alternative journey to Ella here.

Optional via Nuwara Eliya & tea region (1 day)

If you have more time, you can make an optional stop during this Sri Lanka itinerary in Nuwara Eliya. And if you love tea, this is a destination not to be missed. Nuwara Eliya is known for its vast rows of bright green tea bushes. The climate feels cooler and almost European, which explains its nickname “Little England”.

Ella is a charming mountain village in the south of Sri Lanka, surrounded by tea plantations, green hills and waterfalls. Optional: Udawalawe National Park (1 day)

Today, you can make an interesting stop to break up your route from Ella to your next destination in Sri Lanka. On the way from the highlands to the southern coast lies Udawalawe National Park. During a safari, you’ll almost certainly see herds of elephants, sometimes from very close range, as well as water buffalo, crocodiles, peacocks and, with some luck, even a leopard. Because the vegetation is less dense than in other parks such as Yala, animals are often easier to spot. Udawalawe is also less crowded, which makes the experience feel especially pure. Udawalawe can be visited as a stopover tour between Ella, the interior or the south coast, or as part of a half-day or full-day tour.

Yala National Park (2 days)

During this part of the route, you descend southwards towards Yala National Park, one of the most famous national parks in Sri Lanka, located between jungle and coastline. Open plains, marshes and forests are home to elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo, deer, sloth bears and, if you’re lucky, leopards. The park is known for its high concentration of leopards.

The best way to visit Yala National Park is by safari, travelling through the park in a 4×4 jeep, preferably early in the morning or late in the afternoon when wildlife is most active. A tour with many excellent reviews can be booked here. Around the park, you’ll find luxury accommodations and safari lodges such as Uga Chena Huts, combining game drives and overnight stays. Tangalle

Tangalle is the perfect destination if you’re looking for peace. You’ll find long, wide beaches lined with palm trees, ideal for leisurely walks. I stayed at the beautiful Uga Prava boutique hotel. With just seven suites, a minimalist design, an idyllic infinity pool and direct beach access, this is one of those places where you can truly unwind. It’s also a perfect base for exploring Sri Lanka’s south coast.

Hiriketiya

A little further west lies Hiriketiya, also known as ‘Hiri’, which is famous for its laid-back vibe. The beach is set in a small bay and is a popular spot for surfers and digital nomads. You’ll find yoga schools, relaxed beach bars and good restaurants.

Mirissa

Mirissa is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular beach destinations, thanks to its golden sand and calm bays. The sea is generally tranquil, making it ideal for swimming or snorkelling. Between November and April, you also have a good chance of spotting blue whales and other whales in the wild. In the evening, the area comes alive with beach bars and seaside restaurants.

Ahangama

Another hotspot is Ahangama, known for its good waves and creative atmosphere. You’ll often see surfers heading into the water at sunrise, followed by breakfast at one of the trendy cafés. Ahangama is still upcoming, which is exactly what makes it worth including in your Sri Lanka itinerary.

Unawatuna

Finally, there is Unawatuna, one of Sri Lanka’s best-known beaches. Thanks to its crescent-shaped bay and calm waters, it’s a great place for swimming and snorkelling. You’ll also find plenty of lively spots nearby, along with a wide range of restaurants and accommodations, such as the beautiful Miss Ceylon.

Tip: Along Sri Lanka’s south coast, you can still see the iconic stilt fishermen, balancing on wooden poles in the sea. This fishing technique originated out of necessity during food shortages after the Second World War. Although this traditional method of fishing is no longer officially practised, fishermen still pose for photos today in exchange for a few rupees.

The fort is located on a peninsula and is surrounded by ramparts overlooking the Indian Ocean. Inside the walls, you’ll find narrow streets, colonial buildings and old churches that reflect Portuguese, Dutch and British influences. There are also small art galleries and cafés.
