Sri Lanka is a country where you’ll find so much beauty that choosing the perfect route can be surprisingly difficult. But what should you see and do if you only have 10 days in Sri Lanka? In this Sri Lanka itinerary 10 days, I share a carefully balanced route with highlights across the island. You’ll discover must-see places, meaningful experiences and practical tips, with ideas to adapt the route to your time and travel style. Combining culture, nature and safari, this itinerary offers a well-rounded introduction to Sri Lanka at your own pace.
Travelling around Sri Lanka can be done in many different ways, depending on your budget and the distances you want to cover. However, the best recommendation I can give is to travel with a private driver. It is fast, comfortable and very affordable. I personally had very positive experiences with this service. Of course, you can also arrange taxis through your hotel, book through ride-hailing apps such as uber or PickMe or search, compare and book transportation via Bookaway.
For airport transfers, Welcome Pick Ups is a great option, as there’s nothing better than being picked up straight after a long flight.
Another popular way to travel is by train, with the absolute highlight being the route between Kandy and Ella. This journey is often described as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, offering views of tea plantations, mountains and small villages. It is important to book this iconic train journey online and well in advance to secure your spot. Train tickets can also be searched, compared and booked via Bookaway.
This Sri Lanka itinerary 10 days starts in Colombo, where most international flights arrive. After landing at Bandaranaike International Airport, it’s a 30-45 minute drive to Negombo, a coastal town with wide beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. Take a stroll along the promenade or visit the local fish market, where trading is in full swing. It’s an experience, with rows of fish drying in the sun and vendors weighing their daily catch.

Today this Sri Lanka itinerary 10 days takes you to Kandy. The city lies among rolling hills and is considered the spiritual centre of Sri Lanka, because of its Temple of the Tooth Relic. Every day, countless pilgrims and visitors come here to attend ceremonies. According to tradition, a tooth of Buddha is kept in the temple, making it a place of great spiritual importance. As soon as you enter the temple grounds, you step into a different world, a world of incense, white garments, flower offerings and chanting. There is so much to see, feel and absorb. Just make sure to come prepared and cover your shoulders and legs when entering.
In the afternoon, you can visit the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, where you’ll find orchids, palm trees and towering forest giants. Afterwards, head into lively Kandy, settle down in a tea house or wander through a local market.

Travel time Colombo to Kandy: 3.5 uur.
Do you have more time Sri Lanka? Then it is recommended to add Anuradpahura and/or Sigirya to your Sri Lanka itinerary. Anuradpahura is one of the country’s oldest cities and an important sacred site within Buddhism. Sigiriya Rock, also known as Lion Rock, is an ancient rock fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rising nearly 200 metres above the surrounding plains, it contains the remains of an ancient palace, complete with gardens, moats and frescoes, offering incredible views of the surroundings. One of the highlights during a Sri Lanka itinerary 10 days is without a doubt the train journey between Kandy and Ella. The railway runs through hilly terrain, past tea plantations, waterfalls and small mountain stations. The train slowly winds its way through the landscape, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the views. Whether you choose a seat or stand in the open doorway, this journey is an experience.

If you have more time, you can make an optional stop during your Sri Lanka itinerary 10 days in Nuwara Eliya. And if you love tea, this is a destination not to be missed. Nuwara Eliya is known for its vast rows of bright green tea bushes. The climate feels cooler and almost European, which explains its nickname “Little England”.
The most enjoyable way to explore Nuwara Eliya and its surroundings is by joining a tour that takes you past waterfalls and tea plantations, perfect if you want to combine several Sri Lanka highlights during your journey. This tour includes visits to Labookellie Tea Estate and Ramboda Falls, and this tour takes you past multiple waterfalls and two tea plantations in one day
Travel time Kandy to Nuwara Eliya: 4 hours by train.
If you’re not travelling by train from Kandy to Ella, you can include Ramboda Falls, idyllically located in a lush green setting, in your Sri Lanka itinerary 10 days. Ramboda Falls consists of several tiers and can be admired both from the road and via short walking paths. The easiest way to get close to the waterfall is by following a short trail starting from the Ramboda Falls Hotel. You can also visit the waterfalls as part of a day tour from Nuwara Eliya.
Ella is a charming mountain village in the south of Sri Lanka, surrounded by tea plantations, green hills and waterfalls. The relaxed atmosphere, fresh mountain air and beautiful natural surroundings make it one of the most popular destinations in Sri Lanka. You can enjoy scenic hikes here, such as the walk to Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock, or visit the famous Nine Arch Bridge.
A great way to see more of Ella and its surroundings is by booking a sightseeing tour and experiencing the top activities in the area.
Today you are traveling southwards towards Yala National Park, one of the most famous national parks in Sri Lanka, located between jungle and coastline. Open plains, marshes and forests are home to elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo, deer, sloth bears and, if you’re lucky, leopards. The park is known for its high concentration of leopards.
The best way to visit Yala National Park is by safari, travelling through the park in a 4×4 jeep, preferably early in the morning or late in the afternoon when wildlife is most active. A tour with many excellent reviews can be booked here. Around the park, you’ll find luxury accommodations and safari lodges such as Uga Chena Huts, combining game drives and overnight stays. Travel time Ella to Yala National Park: approximately 3 hours.
There is nothing better than ending your round trip through Sri Lanka on one of the stunning beaches along the south coast. Which beach you choose is entirely up to you, as each place has its own atmosphere and characteristics. Depending on your time, I would definitely recommend you to choose at least two beach destinations.
Tangalle is the perfect destination if you’re looking for peace. You’ll find long, wide beaches lined with palm trees, ideal for leisurely walks. I stayed at the beautiful Uga Prava boutique hotel. With just seven suites, a minimalist design, an idyllic infinity pool and direct beach access, this is one of those places where you can truly unwind. It’s also a perfect base for exploring Sri Lanka’s south coast.
A little further west lies Hiriketiya, also known as ‘Hiri’, which is famous for its laid-back vibe. The beach is set in a small bay and is a popular spot for surfers and digital nomads. You’ll find yoga schools, relaxed beach bars and good restaurants.
Mirissa is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular beach destinations, thanks to its golden sand and calm bays. The sea is generally tranquil, making it ideal for swimming or snorkelling. Between November and April, you also have a good chance of spotting blue whales and other whales in the wild. In the evening, the area comes alive with beach bars and seaside restaurants.
Another hotspot is Ahangama, known for its good waves and creative atmosphere. You’ll often see surfers heading into the water at sunrise, followed by breakfast at one of the trendy cafés. Ahangama is still upcoming, which is exactly what makes it worth including in your Sri Lanka itinerary 10 days.
Finally, there is Unawatuna, one of Sri Lanka’s best-known beaches. Thanks to its crescent-shaped bay and calm waters, it’s a great place for swimming and snorkelling. You’ll also find plenty of lively spots nearby, along with a wide range of restaurants and accommodations, such as the beautiful Miss Ceylon.
Tip: Along Sri Lanka’s south coast, you can still see the iconic stilt fishermen, balancing on wooden poles in the sea. This fishing technique originated out of necessity during food shortages after the Second World War. Although this traditional method of fishing is no longer officially practised, fishermen still pose for photos today in exchange for a few rupees.
Travel time from Yala National Park to the coast: depending on your final destination and route, between 2 and 3 hours.
This Sri Lanka route ends in Galle, known for its well-preserved colonial heritage and the iconic Galle Fort, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort is located on a peninsula and is surrounded by ramparts overlooking the Indian Ocean. Inside the walls, you’ll find narrow streets, colonial buildings and old churches that reflect Portuguese, Dutch and British influences. There are also small art galleries and cafés. If you’d like to learn more about the history of Galle, this is a nice tour.
Your Sri Lanka itinerary 10 days is almost coming to an end. Today, you travel back to Colombo for your flight or a final overnight stay in the capital, saying goodbye to this incredible country.
