One of the most charming towns in Denmark’s Himmerland region is Mariager, often referred to as the Town of Roses. Nestled along the Mariager Fjord, this town is known famous for its lovely streets, colourful half-timbered houses, and an abundance of blooming roses. It’s also a perfect starting point for exploring the surrounding natural area and attractions. In this travel guide, you will find the best things to do and see in Mariager in Denmark, including tips for exploring the Mariager fjord.

Mariager Ford Denmark

Stretching approximately 35 kilometers inland from the Kattegat Sea, Mariager Fjord is the longest fjord on the Jutland peninsula and forms the southern boundary of the Himmerland region. The fjord meanders through a diverse landscape of hills, forests, and Danish fishing villages. It is the perfect setting for activities like hiking, cycling, and sailing. Mariager is a great place to stay, while discovering the fjord.

Things to do and see around Mariager Ford Denmark

Explore the little town

The center of Mariager consists of narrow streets and colourful half-timbered houses, adorned with blooming roses in every hue. It is a great place to walk around and to soak up the town’s atmosphere.

Mariager Hiking Trail

One of the best ways to experience the Mariager Fjord and its surroundings is by taking a hike. The Mariager Hiking Route is a 12.2 km circular trail that starts and ends in Mariager, leading you through several points of interest. The itinerary takes you through natural areas like Alstrup Krat and the Oksendal Valley. The landscape here is stunning: from green valleys and dark coniferous forests to Hohøj, which is said to be the largest Bronze Age burial mound in Scandinavia. Don’t forget to pack some snacks and drinks for a picnic along the way.

You can best start the route at Mariager Harbour, where it takes three hours to complete the loop. The trail is easy, with a few small hills, and is well-marked with yellow signs, so getting lost isn’t an issue. For more information, you can visit the official tourism website.

Meet Ivan Evigvår

One of the coolest spots to visit in Mariager is Ivan Evigvår, a wooden troll hidden in the woods. Not only is it a beautifully crafted design, but seeing it also brings a big smile to your face.

The wooden sculpture was created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo and is located in the forest Munkholm Anlægget. You’ll need to make a bit of an effort to find him, but that’s part of the experience. A visit to Ivan can be easily combined with the Mariager Hiking Route.

The Rose Garden

Roses are everywhere in Mariager, but make sure to have a look at Rosenhaven, the Rose Garden, to fully immerse yourself in their fragrances. Here, you’ll find over 400 different rose varieties from around the world.

Mariager Saltcenter

Beneath Himmerland lies a salt dome that has played a significant role in the region for centuries. The salt extracted here is renowned for its purity and quality. At the Mariager Saltcenter, you can discover how this salt has been traditionally produced since the Middle Ages. You can also explore a replica of a Polish salt mine and even produce your own salt.

Don’t forget to bring your swimwear. There’s a saltwater pool reminiscent of the Dead Sea, where the high salt content allows you to float effortlessly.

Mariager Klosterkirke

One of Mariager’s landmarks is the Klosterkirke, one of the country’s oldest monastic churches. Visible from the road, the church offers photo opportunities and a glimpse into the town’s history.

Mariager Beaches

On a beautiful day, nothing beats a refreshing dip in the Mariager Fjord. Mariager Beach is a small, man-made sandy beach located just east of the marina. A short walk from the harbour brings you to Færgehagen Strand, a swimming spot, including a jetty.

Restaurants in Mariager Denmark

Lunch at Salt Cafe

A spot you definitely shouldn’t miss for lunch is Salt Cafe. Here, you sit in your own little greenhouse with views over the fjord. The menu, which is only in Danish (thank you Google Translate), includes delicious fresh sandwiches and fish dishes.

Diner at Hotel Postgården

For dinner, I recommend Hotel Postgården, an 18th-century half-timbered house. The restaurant feels a bit old fashioned but serves excellent classic Danish dishes with a modern twist, including local fish specialties. Everything is prepared using fresh, seasonal ingredients. You can also stay overnight at Hotel Postgården.

How to reach Mariager in Denmark

Mariager is easy to reach by car from Germany, as the town lies in Himmerland on the Danish mainland. But it might be best to fly to Aalborg (around 1 hour drive) or Billund (around 2 hours drive) and rent a car at the airport. You can find and book cheap flights here. A nice option is to combine Mariager with Copenhagen. From there, it’s about a 4-hour drive via Funen or you can take the ferry via Aarhus.
