One of the most charming towns along Denmark’s Limfjord in the Himmerland region is Løgstør. Known as the “Mussel Capital” of Denmark, this coastal place is perfect, if you are looking for a relaxed atmosphere and amazing seafood. You can stroll along the fjord, discover hidden beaches, and soak in the tranquility that makes this region so special. In this travel guide you will find the best things to do in and around Løgstør, including tips for places and activities you shouldn’t miss along the Limfjord.

The Limfjord is one of Denmark’s most renowned fjords, stretching approximately 180 kilometers from the North Sea to the Kattegat. Unlike the deep fjords in Norway and Iceland you might be familiar with, the Limfjord is a shallow sea inlet, characterized by a landscape of islands, bays, and peaceful villages. The area invites for scenic walks, boat trips, and the tasting of local specialties. Løgstør, situated along its shores, serves as a perfect base for exploring the fjord’s surroundings.

One of the famous places in Løgstør is Frederik VII’s Canal, a 4.4-kilometre waterway hand-dug between 1856 and 1861. The canal was constructed to provide ships with a safe passage past the shallow sandbanks of the LImfjord. Today, the canal is a protected area and a scenic spot for walks. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a fox.

Adjacent to the canal is the Limfjord Museum, housed in the former canal manager’s residence from 1863. The museum offers insights into the region’s maritime history, with exhibits on fishing, sailing, and the canal’s construction. Though small, it’s worth a visit, and while you’re there, consider booking a short boat trip on Frederik VII’s Canal. In the building opposite, also part of the museum, you can learn about schnapps and go for a little tasting.

Løgstør is renowned for its abundance of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), which have been a vital part of the local economy and culture for over a century. Along the shores of the Limfjord, especially near Mussel Beach and Frederik VII’s Canal, you will find numerous shells.

When in Denmark’s mussel capital, tasting the fresh Limfjord mussels is a must. One of the best spots to try them is Restaurant Kanalfogedens Køkken, located right by Frederik VII’s Canal. Their menu includes mussels prepared with garlic, green curry, or saffron and fennel, served with homemade bread and butter.
Løgstør’s town center consists of 19th-century streets lined with former fishermen’s and sailors’ homes. As you stroll through, you’ll notice numerous shell-inspired artworks. Make sure to also keep an eye out for the street art.

For a great lunch, head to Kulgaarden, situated at the harbour. Here, you can enjoy classic Danish seafood dishes, including the ‘Stjerneskud’ (shooting star): a generously topped open sandwich including steamed and fried fish fillets, salmon, shrimp, and caviar.
To really experience the Limfjord region, consider exploring the Himmerlandsstien, a 79-kilometre cycling and walking trail that begins in Løgstør and ends in Viborg. This trail follows the path of a former railway line and is surfaced with fine gravel, making it suitable for both walkers and cyclists. Along the way, you’ll pass several landscapes, including heathlands, forests, and waterways. Make sure to pack food and drinks for a picnic, there are several rest areas with benches and tables. It is also possible to spend the night in one of the shelters along the way. More information about the Himmerlandsstien can be found here.
One of the cultural sites in Himmerland Denmark, is Aggersborg, the largest Viking ring fortress in the country. Situated along the Limfjord, just a 10-minute drive from Løgstør, this circular stronghold was constructed around 980 CE during the reign of King Harald Bluetooth. With a diameter of 240 meters and 48 longhouses, arranged within its symmetrical ramparts, Aggersborg served as a strategic military and administrative hub, overseeing trade and military routes across Jutland. In 2023, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside four other Viking ring fortresses in Denmark.

Today, it is possible to explore the reconstructed site. It is recommended to head out with a guide, making sure the stories and history come to life, as little remains of the original structures.
Løgstør, proudly celebrates its mussel heritage with two annual festivals. In April, the Muslingehøstfest (Mussel Harvest Festival) marks the beginning of the mussel season. The first catch is brought ashore, approved by local authorities, and then prepared by town chefs who serve it free to visitors, accompanied by traditional snaps. The three-day Muslingefestival (Mussel Festival), taking place in July, offers a gastronomic experience with mussel dishes, live music, and a local market. A highlight is the Friday evening event where a ton of mussels is served.
