Introduction Hotel Casa Gangotena Quito Ecuador
Casa Gangotena is a former mansion of the wealthy Gangotena family, located on Plaza San Francisco in Quito. After a devastating fire in 1914, the Gangotena family invested in restoring the family home, attracting two important Italian architects, who managed to turn it into a true palace. Followed by years of prosperity and development in Quito, Casa Gangotena was transformed into a luxury boutique hotel in 2011, where atmosphere and style still play an important role. Something that is reflected in the beautiful Art Deco interior and the high-end service. Casa Gangotena can count itself as one of the top hotels in Ecuador nowadays.

The rooms
Hotel Casa Gangotena in Quito has 31 rooms spread over three floors. All rooms are stylishly decorated with high ceilings and windows, soft carpets, quality beds, with luxurious bedding, furniture and design inspired by Art Deco. There are standard luxury rooms, rooms with a view of the plaza and different suites, each with its own theme. No room is the same. But whichever room you choose, the most beautiful rooms are located at the front, with a view over Plaza San Francisco. It won’t get any better. From your balcony you can see the city waking up in the morning, before the busy city life begins, and at the end of the day it slowly becomes peaceful again.

Restaurants Hotel Casa Gangotena
It is not without reason that countless business people and stylish Quiteños book a table at Casa Gangotena to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner. And as a hotel guest you should definitely not miss this cuisine. The menu at Casa Gangotena in Quito is described as la cocina mestiza and is a tribute to Ecuadorian cuisine. Dishes are created, using traditional and modern cooking techniques, with products and ingredients being purchased locally as much as possible. How about beetroot tartare with fruit, amaranth grains, pickled radishes and walnut? Fish with fried yucca, mandarin and ginger puree? Or the tuna, covered with a crust made from roasted corn, combined with chili plantain and coconut puree?
There are several places in the building where you can eat and drink something. For example, Hotel Casa Gangotena owns a roof terrace, with perhaps the best view of Plaza San Francisco in Quito. It is a perfect place for wine, cocktails and small dishes including delicious ceviches. In the evening, you can look out over the city and its many lights. In the restaurant on the main floor you can order an à la carte lunch or book a high tea in the patio, which is spacious with natural light. And in the bar, with a wide range of cocktails and gins, you can also relax in style in the leather chairs.

Every day at 5 p.m. Casa Gangotena offers a program with activities that include, a tour of the building to learn more about the family that once lived here, a chocolate- workshop, how to prepare a shrimp or palm ceviche or short visit of the square, for an explanation of the buildings and the stories behind it. Unique tour “Live Quito Like a Local”
There are many interesting city tours you can book in Quito, but one tour that is different in my opinion is the “Live Quito Like a Local tour”, organized by Casa Gangotena. During this half-day excursion, you will not only visit some of Quito’s highlights, but also discover the San Roque neighborhood, where local entrepreneurs and residents play the most important role.
Together with a guide, you will explore the narrow streets of this neighborhood. You will stop at a shop where medicinal plants and herbs are sold, a place where people queue to buy religious statues, sweet shops and a pharmacy with the local tea Agua de la Vida.
You will also stroll through a local market and learn more about how Quiteños visit a local shaman here for spiritual cleansing. It is special that you as a foreigner can experience this in a pure and loving way too. Because there are almost no tourists around, you really feel like a local. The tour ends with a chocolate tasting where you are taken into the world of Ecuadorian cocoa and the process of chocolate making. Recommended!
