Welcome to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador

The Galapagos Islands! Perhaps you have always dreamed of visiting these islands. Maybe you remember it from school books or have seen images of it on television. The Galapagos Islands are a unique place on earth and a trip there is an experience you will remember for a lifetime. But good preparation is essential because there are countless tours and packages offered. I was lucky enough to visit the Galapagos Islands several times, both for work and personal reasons. So in this article I am excited to tell you more about the Galapagos Islands and how to get the most out of your trip.

Where are the Galápagos Islands located?

The Galápagos Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 kilometers west of Ecuador, roughly a two-hour flight from the mainland. The archipelago consists of thirteen large islands and dozens of smaller islands and rock formations. The islands are named after the Galápagos giant tortoise, which lives here in large numbers.

Mosquera, located between Galapagos island Baltra and North Seymour, is a small group of islands, known for its rocks and sandy beaches where seals, iguanas, crabs and various birds live.

What makes the Galápagos Islands so special?

The Galápagos Islands are best known for their exceptional biodiversity. Due to their isolated location, plants and animals on the islands have evolved in their own unique way, without influence from their mainland counterparts. As a result, many endemic species have developed. Here you can find remarkable species of tortoises, penguins, flamingos, marine iguanas, and birds that exist nowhere else in the world. It was here that Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution and published his findings in the famous book The Origin of Species. Since 1978, the Galápagos Islands have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the surrounding ocean has been declared a protected marine reserve.

Galapagos cruise vs. staying on the Islands

There are several ways to visit the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador.

Staying on the islands (island hopping)

With island hopping, you stay in hotels on the larger islands, such as Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal, and Isabela. From there, you take day trips to other islands.

Advantages:

  • often cheaper
  • more freedom: you decide what to do during the day, and in the evening you can dine in one of the local towns
  • suitable for longer stays

Disadvantages:

  • limited access to remote islands
  • more travel time between locations

A cruise in the Galápagos Islands

But the very best way to experience the Galápagos Islands is through a cruise, where you stay on a ship that takes you to several different islands. A cruise is an experience in itself, but where better to do this than in the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador? You fall asleep in the most remote locations, wake up to views of sea turtles, and visit islands that can only be accessed with special permits.

Why choose a Galápagos cruise?

During a cruise, you visit multiple islands without having to constantly pack and travel. You are guided by experienced naturalist guides who tell you everything about the local flora and fauna. In addition, excursions, snorkeling activities, and meals are often included. This allows you to fully focus on the experience, without having to worry about practical arrangements.

How to choose the right Galápagos cruise

In the Galápagos Islands, you can choose from numerous ships that sail different routes. All operators have the necessary permits to operate in the Galápagos and offer a unique experience, something you can almost always expect in such an extraordinary destination. However, there are clear differences in ship size, comfort, style, service, what is included or excluded, and the itinerary. These factors naturally influence the price. Because a trip to the Galápagos is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, it’s worth taking the time to make the right choice. After all, there is a significant difference in experience between traveling on a ship with a small group of passengers and one with hundreds of people.
